How to prepare for your One Year Photoshoot!

Your little one is turning ONE! You've made it together through a whole year and you want to capture their last moments as a "baby". Scheduling a one-year cake smash is a great way to capture this milestone!

However, this session is more than just grabbing a cake and showing up. Let's go through all the steps in preparing for this photoshoot!

  • 1. Rest Up! When parents ask me what time to schedule their session, I always suggest whatever time works best around your baby's naps. I'm pretty flexible with scheduling and want to ensure a happy baby!
  • 2. Fuel Up! A fed baby is a happy baby! Whether this means a quick bottle once you arrive at my studio or even a snack break during the session. Sometimes we all get a little hangry. Little snacks like goldfish crackers or puffs also help during the photo shoot if they need to be distracted for a quick snap of the button.
  • 3. Dress up! I have lots of little outfits ranging from 6m-1yr. I don't typically recommend bringing in outfits from stores like Walmart or Target, as they don't fit my style. I love the look of simple onesies and rompers. And the best part about my client closet is that you don't have to stress about searching/purchasing! Ask me for the link!

Practice Makes Perfect!

A week or so before your session, I recommend introducing your baby to cake (if you haven't already). I've seen several babies look at their cake during a session and not even know what to do. Or they are afraid to get messy because oftentimes, we tell our babies NOT to make a mess. So giving them a trial run or two, even with just a small cupcake, can help them go at it during the photoshoot!

Cake Choices

The type of cake that you provide is very important! The frosting should be nice and creamy...not fondant, as fondant can be hard for the baby to break through. The colors of your cake are also important! I'd stay away from chocolate cake/frosting, as it can give the appearance of mud or poop on their face (yikes! haha) And red velvet/red frosting can give the appearance of blood! (gross!)
